Help/FAQs

Upload or search on photos like the one above, based on criteria like the time and place the photo was taken.

Use provided tools to circle your face in the crowd and add a personal note. Is that you right there?
How does it work?

Faces in the Crowd (FitC) is a free "social activity" site where people can interact and have fun. Here, users can upload digital photos of people at concerts, parties, parks, in the background of family photos, or even groups of avatars from multi-player online games. Other users can then search those uploaded images, by time, place, keywords, etc., to find a photo they might be in. If they find one, they review it using the provided tools and then circle their face in the photo if they find it. Users can also add comments to the photo and even vote on whether a user actually appears in a photo they have circled. It's a ton of fun, so tell everyone you know and upload, upload, upload!!

Getting Started

  • First, make sure your browser has the free Flash plug-in. If you don't have it, click here to get it.
  • If you would like to participate (and not just browse), setup a free account and complete the required fields.
    • Note: Accounts are optional, but users without accounts may not confirm circles, add comments or vote.
    • Hint: Make sure to upload a clear biographical photo of yourself so that users can compare your face to photos you have circled, and then vote on whether they think it is you in the photo. So no fibbing!
  • Once your account is setup, upload photos with images of people in crowds, such as a picture of a crowd itself or a photo with a lot of people in the background.
    • Note: The system allows photos (JPEG, GIF or PNG) up to 5 megapixels in size (2592x1944 pixels) and will reduce larger ones proportionately. Both horizontal and vertical photos are acceptable.
    • Hint: Make sure to upload sharp/clear photos that make it easy to see peoples' faces.
    • Hint: Make sure to provide fairly accurate information on the location and time/date. Also, provide some descriptive keywords about the photo or location that users might possibly search on to find it.
  • That’s it. Once you have an account, you can upload photos, search photos, circle yourself in photos, vote and post comments. You can also direct other users to your MyFitC page by providing them with your direct URL.

FAQs

Why do I need an account?

  • Because we said so! Nah, just kidding (kind of).
  • An account is needed if you want to upload photos, circle your face in photos, add comments or vote.
  • An account is needed to get credit for "Hits" you add to photos, and for Hits other users add to your photos. This will help you move up in the rankings.
  • An account is needed to activate your MyFitC page where all your personal photo uploads and any Hits you have claimed will be displayed.
  • An account lets you direct people to your MyFitC page via its own URL.

How many photos can I upload and in what size and format?

  • You can upload up to 20 photos in JPEG, GIF or PNG format. Photos can be up to 5 megapixels in size (2592x1944 pixels) and the system will resize larger ones accordingly.
    • Note: If the photo uploaded is in vertical (portrait) format, portions of it may be hidden by the Photo Frame so users will need to use the provided photo tools to move the image up and down in the frame to see all of it.

How do I edit photos that I have uploaded?

  • Visit the Edit My Photo Uploads page to modify your own photos. You can also reach this page via the link on your My Latest Hits page.

How many photos can I circle?

  • You may add a "Hit" circle to as many different photos as you find yourself in. However, you may only add one Hit Circle per photo.
    • Note: Circle just your own face using the smallest circle possible. This will enable other people in the photo to circle their faces as well, with a minimum overlap of circles.
    • Hint: Be honest! Other users will be voting on the circles you add (Is that really you?) and this may affect your ranking.

What is the Search/Circle Page?

  • On this page, any visitor may search the photo database to see if any photos match a time and place they have been.
  • If a matching search result is found, all users may click the result to go to the View/Add Hit Circle page for that photo.

What is the Upload Page?

  • This page enables logged-in users to upload photos to the site so that others may search on, view and circle them.
  • It features a form where details specific to a photo can be entered (time taken, place taken, title, etc.) and the photo can be selected from your local hard drive to upload.
  • The information provided here will be displayed with the photo throughout the site and can also be searched on.

What is the View/Add Hit Circle Page?

  • This page is accessed when a photo is clicked within search results or via a Latest Uploads link.
  • Here a logged-in user can add a"Hit Circle" and a "Hit Note" around their face in the photo, using provided Photo Tools [Tools Help].
  • Clicking an existing circle takes you to the View/Vote page so you can vote whether the person who circled the photo is actually the person in the photo. The page also contains the person's bio image for comparison.

What is the View/Vote Page?

  • On this page, all users may view photos that have been circled while logged in users may also vote whether the person claiming to be in a photo actually is in the photo.
  • Hint: Moving the cursor over a circle will display the Hit Note added by that user.
  • Hint: Clicking the circle takes you to that particular user's MyFitC page.

What is the MyFitC page?

  • This is a FitC account-holder's personal page. Here, site visitors may view all the photos a specific FitC user has uploaded as well as any photos where that user has circled their face. A user's bio photo and personal statement may also be viewed here.

What is a Photo Frame?

  • The Photo Frame (example right) is a function available on the "View/Add Hit Circle" and "View/Vote" pages, where users can manipulate photos, by zooming in and moving the photo, to get a better view of the crowd.
  • Using the provided tools [Tools Help], a user can more easily spot themself in the crowd and add a circle around their face. Note: Circle just your own face using the smallest circle possible. This will enable other people in the photo to circle their faces as well, with a minimum of circle overlap.

What are "Hit Circles" and "Hit Notes"?

  • "Hit Circles" and "Hit Notes" (examples in the Photo Frame image above right) are personal markers added to photos, using tools in the Photo Frame. With them, users can indicate their face in the crowd with a circle and add a personal note.
